Croydon Cycling Campaign stole the limelight at the official launch party for London's cycle route network maps.
CCC Treasurer Liz Mincer and fellow member, Trevor Rolfe, attended the official ceremony opened by Mayor Ken Livingstone. They were proud to show off the latest addition to their fleet of "Cycling for All" bikes, a tricycle that carries a wheelchair user - or heavy goods - in the front. Ken was about to slip away back to his Mayoral desk but Liz, spotting a photo opportunity too good to miss, asked him to pose for the cameras. Ken duly obliged and said "Cycling is an integral and valuable part of London's transport system and I believe these maps will give Londoners more choice by raising awareness of safer cycle routes and facilities. I believe the maps are a major step forward, highlighting how easy it is for Londoners to get around the city by bike."
Over one million free street maps have been printed following joint working between Transport for London and CCC's parent body, the London Cycling Campaign. The 19-map series covers the whole of Greater London, each one covering an area of about 50 square miles. On one side there is an enlarged section of the West End and City, on the other a local map showing official London Cycle Network routes and streets recommended by cyclists. The maps also have useful tips and parking information and will be widely available from some tube stations, bus garages, health and sports centres, doctors' surgeries and bike shops. They can also be obtained by telephoning the 24 hour Travel Information Line on 020 7222 1234 or online via http://www.croydon-lcc.org.uk/info/cycling_maps.htm. The north of Croydon is covered by map 15, the south by number 18.
Croydon Cycling Campaign are, through their Cycling for All project, pioneering efforts in the capital to provide opportunities for people with disabilities to take up cycling. Trevor Rolfe, who suffers from cerebral palsy, was advised by his doctor to take up cycling for the sake of his health and has been of great help to CCC in planning and promoting this particular project. They plan to set up permanent facilities at the Croydon Sports Arena in South Norwood, and would welcome any support in doing so - contact Liz Mincer on 020 8681 7600 or e-mail liz@croydon-lcc.org.uk.
