Collision at Park Hill Road & Coombe Road

On Friday 25th January 2002 there was a major collision between a bus and a car on the double mini roundabout junction between Park Hill Road and Coombe Road in Croydon.

Two members of Croydon Cycling Campaign who live in the area saw the aftermath of the accident - there were at least two fire appliances and several police cars in attendance. The car had ended up on its side and the front of the bus had been smashed in.

This junction is very difficult for pedestrians to cross, intimidating on a bicycle (though the Council has included it in their part of the London Cycle Network) and confusing for drivers.

There is a long history of public campaigns to improve conditions there, but the council has never taken the action needed, which is to put in traffic lights at this location with proper pedestrian phases. There was a public meeting in November 1998, organised by the local MP, Geraint Davies. A series of promises were made there - but it seems these were largely ignored by the Council officer responsible, Chris Martin (Divisional Director, Traffic, Parking & Civil Engineering).
