Have you already given up your New Year resolution to get fit or lose weight? Does the idea of driving to the gym to use an exercise machine seem daft? Do you hate getting stuck in traffic and breathing in fumes from the cars in front?
Then why not make 2002 your very own Year of the Bike? Croydon Cycling Campaign want to help more people take up cycling, whether for leisure or sport, a way of trimming off the excess weight put on over Christmas or as part of a regular heart and lungs workout, or simply a fast, free and fun form of transport. They especially want to reach out to people with special needs or disabilities who, for whatever reason, find it hard to cope with the average bicycle.
Tuesday, 15th January 2002 sees Malcolm Jones of Wise Wheels visit Croydon with a range of specially adapted bikes. Malcolm is an experienced cycling assessor and will be able to help both children and adults learn the advantages of pedal power. If you would like to find out more then contact Liz Mincer of Croydon Cycling Campaign by telephoning 020 8681 7600 or e-mailing liz@croydon-lcc.org.uk
The group's website http://www.croydon-lcc.org.uk has a wealth of information on two-wheeled transport, including a Cycling for All page that has links to organisations which help people with disabilities or other special needs take up cycling and lists companies that provide specially adapted cycles.
Liz said "Croydon Cycling Campaign are keen to extend the advantages of cycling to people whose disabilities have so far excluded them from leisure, fitness, transport and employment opportunities. We have set up this assessment visit as a way of showing people what is possible, and to see whether there is public demand for much more to be done for cyclists, whether disabled or not."
