In the week that the motoring lobby criticised the government's new Transport Secretary, Stephen Byers, for not being able to drive and the new Sports Minister, Richard Caborn, was embarrassed by his inability to answer a list of simple sporting questions live on national radio, it came as welcome news that Croydon Council's Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport & Public Services, Gerry Ryan, can ride a bike.
On Tuesday (19th June) Councillor Ryan joined members of Croydon's cycling community on a tour of the current official backstreet route from Croydon to Norbury, returning to the Town Hall via the proposed new direct route along London Road.
The tour formed part of the national Festival of Cycling, which also saw Croydon Cycling Campaign's two new rickshaws make an appearance in the town centre and a family ride along the Waterlink Way cycle route.
Further two and three-wheeled frolics are planned for Croydon Carnival in July and Car Free Day in September; more details are available on the CCC website, http://www.croydon-lcc.org.uk
