Croydon Cycling Campaign are mounting a last ditch bid to stop plans for a one-way road scheme at the Upper Norwood "triangle" in South London.
Croydon council's scheme was originally hatched in response to neighbouring Bromley Council's plans to develop a cinema and leisure complex with a huge car park on the former Crystal Palace site. However, it has been thrown into doubt following Bromley's cave in which has seen them abandon the proposals in the face of mounting legal challenges by environmentalists.
Now the cyclists are hoping to persuade Croydon's councillors that the proposed one-way gyratory should be reconsidered because it is no longer justifiable and flies in the face of local Council, Greater London Authority and government policies to promote cycling.
They are particularly angry that calls for cycle lanes to make biking safer and more convenient have been rejected by Council staff, who they say are responsible for the high cycling accident record in the Borough and poor quality cycling schemes.
A campaign spokesperson said that unless their pleas were heeded, they would consider making a formal complaint of maladministration to the Local Government Ombudsman. He added "we would prefer not to, and would rather work effectively with those officers and Councillors we know to be keen on making Croydon a safe and pleasant environment in which to cycle."
