Upper Norwood Triangle

Junction demo

Public opposition to the one-way gyratory scheme introduced in May this year continues to grow, much to the consternation of Councillors who had been assured by its designers that it would regenerate the area, improve traffic flow and indeed, benefit cyclists.

Our gripe is that part of the London Cycle Network has been nicked and our lowly pleas for contra-flow cycle lanes were dismissed as "unfeasible". A practical demonstration of the potential of pedal power was thus called for which was our part of the LCC junctions campaign and drew an interesting response. The lead was taken by local cyclist Mark Green, email mark.green@bdo.co.uk, phone 020 8653 2588.

Local campaigners were delighted to see us, and using a rickshaw hired from Downham Cycle Taxis, we took both them and several bemused Councillors around the Triangle to demonstrate that, despite what they had been told, there really was space to accommodate cyclists.

Some very useful contacts were made and will help us take this matter forward. However, one thing remains unchanged - we won't be patronised, bullied or cheated from what is rightfully ours: high quality cycling facilities and conditions designed to increase cycling - nothing less will do.
