This project grew from humble beginnings. The original seed was the purchase of two "home made" rickshaws by CCC. These eventually proved to be unviable without spending unjustifiable sums, but at about that point it was decided to get more serious and help set up a rickshaw co-operative in town, with "real" rickshaws and professional riders.
Croydon Rickshaws in town
The project took far more time, paperwork and effort to get going than originally hoped. Liz Mincer in particular put in a huge amount of work applying for grants, looking for storage space, arranging insurance etc. Croydon Cycling Campaign members funded one rickshaw, the Co-op another, while grants were obtained for substantial costs including rider salaries. Croydon Council gave backing and support at both officer and political level.
The project is now fully independent under Croydon Rickshaw Co-operative, and additional rickshaws were recently acquired and have been spotted around town. However at present the service seems rather patchy. If you want more information or would like to get involved as a rider or in building the business then contact Tariq Shabbeer at the Council (email: tariq.shabbeer@croydon-lcc.org.uk).
