Fell Road, Car Free Day 2001

What is it?

Car Free Day is an opportunity for people to think about car use and its effects on urban quality of life. Held on September 22nd each year throughout the European Union, Car Free Day aims to promote ways of getting around town without a car... public transport, walking and cycling.

So what's wrong with cars? Take a look at Car Trouble.

In mainland Europe, Car Free Day has been well established for a number of years, and in some states, entire towns are closed to cars throughout the day. In Britain, Car Free Day started in 2000, with popular and successful street parties being held in several London boroughs. Croydon held its first Car Free Day in 2001, an event that was organised by Croydon Cycling Campaign.

Car Free Day theme: 'In town without my car'

In 2002 the Council took over the event, moved it into High Street, and booked the Company of Cyclists for three whole days, Friday 20th through to the 22nd.
